On Daydreaming - Tuesday Praise & Pray (for others) June 16, 2026

We return to this issue of our thought life today, focusing on the topic of daydreaming. In a world where we are encouraged to imagine without boundaries or reservations, daydreaming has become an acute concern. Many retreat into their minds to avoid the difficult realities of life. What may start as a coping mechanism can, unfortunately, become a cage from which freedom is difficult to come by.


Alas, many of us ignore the Bible's teaching to be careful about our thought life. Proverbs 4:23 - Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Part of why such care is needed is that what we meditate on will flow out of our lips. And when that meditation is contrary to God's word and will, the consequences can be severe.


We, therefore, need to be cautious about what we feed our minds and what we daydream about. We are told in Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


Are these the things we ponder? Or, are we instead thinking about the things that defile, such as those Jesus warned about? Matthew 15:18-19 - But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. /For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.


Then there are those among us who have determined they will use the minds God gave them to create the future they want. As you daydream of your desires, remember the downfall of Adam and Eve. They were attracted to the idea of self-reliance, believing the serpent's deception that knowledge outside of the Lord was a good thing.



Many of us seek to use our thought life to create futures devoid of God's input or participation. And this is the key problem. At no point do we seek God's concerns and vision for ourselves or even wait on Him to opine on whether He approves of the ideas we are putting into action without Him. Instead, we tell Him what we want and expect Him to follow our lead.


We don't want to hear it, but we need to say it. This is the approach of those in the occult. They determine what they want and align their thoughts, words, and actions with that idea. Then they brute-force their way to what they want via spiritual means. When a person who calls themself a Christian does the same, even if unknowingly, how are they any different from those under satan's control? Those doing things outside of God's plan and timing?


It is easy to forget that, though God granted us agency, it is wise to submit that agency to Him. This requires the yielding of our thought life to Him - our desires, our dreams, our hopes. And the more we do this, the more we create room for Him to influence the outcomes of our lives. As this happens, we receive His strategy to become who He wants us to be. A version of ourselves that is better in every way and that has access to His best here and in eternity.


And as this becomes a habit, we will no longer retreat into our imagination to gain some semblance of control in our lives, as many currently do. Rather, we will submit issues to the God who desires to take full responsibility for us if we let Him. He, in turn, will help us process each day's events while having a front-row seat to the beautiful future He is designing for us. A future influenced by Him and not satan, which seeks to get into our minds for their destruction.


How we use our 'gray matter' really matters as Christians, and we need to start letting the word and will of the Lord serve as the guardrails for our lives. Our thought life and dreams aren't excluded, and the good Lord will help us all, IJMN Amen.
