Pathways to God's Reward 2 - Tuesday Praise & Pray (for others) April 1, 2025

One of the things Jesus told his followers was that choosing Him would present challenges. He warned that people would hate them because they followed Him (Matthew 10:22). That word proved true because the early Christians were regularly persecuted and massacred. Not only was Jesus crucified but the likes of James, Stephen, Photine, and many others lost their lives because of their faith.

To this day, the choice to follow Christ can result in suffering and persecution. Granted, many have justifiable grievances with certain Christians and churches. This can devolve into a negative view of all Christians, resulting in scoffers insulting believers. Even family members and friends may reject the new believer because they don't understand the sudden changes the Holy Spirit brings. And most sadly, Christians continue to be murdered across the world because the chose to believe in Jesus.

Yet, such persecution is one of several pathways to God's rewards. Jesus said in Matthew 5:12 - Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. His message then, as is His message today, is that the persecution experienced for choosing Him will not go unnoticed by God.

Some may be disappointed knowing the reward will only be received in heaven. However, believers must remember that this world is not their home. Eternity awaits. Philippians 3:20 - But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ. Also, Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:19-20 - “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

God's plan isn't to leave His children to suffer throughout their earthly existence, however. 1 Peter 5:10 - And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. He has promised the fullness of life to those who believe and obey Him. He rewards those who earnestly seek Him. And for those who are treated unfairly, He grants them righteousness and justice (Psalm 103:6). The key is to learn His word and the promises they contain, then meet the requirements needed. When this happens, as aided by the Spirit of the Lord, God's children can open their mouths and see His power at work.

We therefore cannot afford to be carnal and preoccupied solely with the things of this world. We must be heaven-focused, determined to spend eternity with God. We also need to remember that Jesus died on the cross to create our pathway to heaven, which is an undeserved reward in itself. He was persecuted and is still persecuted for our sake. May the good Lord help us and grant us grace to endure the persecution and receive God's rewards for His own, IJMN Amen.

ALTAR CALL

Jesus said that nobody will get to God His Father except through Him in John 14:6. He also said that no one will see the Kingdom of God (i.e. Heaven) if they have not been born again (John 3:3). To qualify to see God in heaven, a person need only repent and believe the good news that Jesus is God's Son who died for the sins of mankind.
